New Hope – BLM Site permit is APPROVED!

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has approved the Special Recreation Permit for the Hope launch site. This site is north of I-10 at the same exit as Airstrip site, but several miles to the north. Our FAA waiver for this site is 8,400 feet AGL, and the nearest structure or paved road is over 3 miles away.

Our first waivered launch at the Hope site will be Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13. Camping is permitted on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Sept. 11, 12, and 13.

Details will follow.

Hit by the oncoming train!

All Hope Site operations are suspended until further notice.  The BLM cultural survey approval has been withdrawn.  This is incredibly disappointing to say the least.  The cultural survey requires a local indian tribe review which can take anywhere from 45 to 60 days.  If the approval is granted then we will continue the process for getting a permit for the site.  In the mean time, we are pursuing other options for a site that will allow us a higher waiver than the one we have at the Airfield Site.  Unfortunately, the MARS group has not had their waiver renewed either, so there is little chance of holding SpringBlast this year as well.  We still have our high power waiver and permits for the Airfield Site (5000ft AGL), come on out and fly a few!

The BLM Permit for the Airfield Site has been approved through September of this year.  We are starting the cycle for the application process for the next year.  The BLM Permit for the Hope Site is still in-work.  The BLM office that controls the Hope Site is issuing a provisional permit for the April weekend dates.  They will have a representative on site to verify that we work to the operations plan we filed and based on their observations they will then issue a permit for the year.  Let’s show them how it is done!

President’s Post – January 2015

Happy New Year!  This is just a note to update you on what has been going on the last few months.  Club elections have been held, yours truly remains as SSS President and NAR Section Advisor, Ken Sparks remains as SSS Vice-President, Chris Choffat remains as Secretary and adds on the duties of Treasurer (Shane Justice has stepped down as Treasurer)and Chad Ellis is the new Member-at-Large (Geoffery Kerbel has stepped down as Member-at-large).  Congratulations to thenew and returning officers and a big thank you for your service to the club to those officers that have stepped down.

Last December we had four certification flights in December and this January we had one certification flight. All were successful! Congratulations to Milan, Sarah, Kelsie and Frank for completing their Level 1 flights.

We have sent in our NAR Section renewal forms for 2015. We have received our BLM permit for the Hope Site which is good for March through December. The next renewal will allow us to extend our use for up to 10 years, the first year being probationary in nature. We held our first 2015 comeptition launch January 17th and was it an incredible day!

Our next scheduled launches are in Mesquite Groves Park, February 21st and the Airfield Site, February 28th (this may be limited to Class 1 rockets only pending FAA Waiver approval for this date). Class 1 rockets are any rocket that weighs 3.3lbs fully loaded and includes a limit of 125gms of propellant (~a baby H).  The Phoenix Regional Meet #42 will be conducted at the Airfield Site, February 28th – take a look at the events planed and bring a rocket or six to enter into the competition, note that points can only be earned by current NAR members.

We are now accepting membership renewals for 2015 – current 2014 memberships expire 4/1/2015.

The club has acquired a storage spot for our club trailer not even 15 miles from the Hope launch site, this reduces the logistics required in supporting the Hope Site weekend launches. Per our agreement with BLM, port-a-jons will be on-site for the Hope weekend launches.  We have purchased a storage box for reloads so that the club can do group buys and be able to store the reloads for the members convenience.

MARS and SSS are planning on the regional SpringBlast! launch as a joint launch to be located at the Red Dry Lake site in Kingman, AZ.  The joint club launches have been very successful so we will continue this relationship for our regional launches for the time being.  Note that unlike last year, MARS has moved their dates to the same weekend as the scheduled Hope Site launches, this allows us to change location should Red Dry Lake be water-logged. The flyer will list both sites with the Kingman Site being the primary launch venue and the Hope Site as the alternate. There will be at least a weeks notice should the venue change from the primary to the alternate.

Last but not least NAR is sponsoring safety grants again this year for the sections of up to $250 for club safety upgrades, we are currently assessing the club needs and will be applying for this grant.   If you have suggestions, please let us know.

Hope to see all of you at our next launches!

GHS Cancelled!

Folks, we have heard from the BLM. The permits are in work but we cannot use the site for the months of January or February due to the big horn sheep breeding season. The next available waivered date is in March. This is too close to Desert Heat and SpringBlast! regional launches to be considered for GHS. We are deeply disappointed in not being able to show case our new waivered site as an alternate GHS launch for its inaugural launch but look forward to the future use of this site. We have included the MARS and SARA launches on our calendar if you need an alternate for the next couple of months. Updates will be provided on this website as they become available. Thank you for your support!

December Launch at New “Hope” site was A success

We had about 15 people out at our new site this weekend. The weather was great. A little drizzle Friday night about midnight, then clear skies with some wind off and on the rest of the weekend.

The first launch was My Estes PSII Nike Smoke on a G-80. With a large chute and a gust of wind, that puppy floated about a mile away, but was recovered and ready to fly again, and I found a full curl mountain goat skull as a bonus!

If you stayed home because of weather, remember, this site is 100 miles away, so weather in Phoenix is not always the same at the site.

Hope to see everyone out there for the January launch.

GHS Dates Being Finalized

All,

We were literally a day away from receiving our BLM permit for our new Hope site when there was a hold placed by BLM due to the lack of a cultural survey. This survey should be completed in December. As a consequence we will miss our opportunity to use our December waiver at the Hope site for GHS. The BLM has indicated that the January date is doable. The calendar and launch schedule have been updated and we will continue to monitor the situation and provide more detailed information as it becomes available. The BLM has been very helpful in this process and we look forward to a long relationship working together. Thank you for your patience.
